Checkered Hours | Hand-Painted Figurative Oil Painting
Checkered Hours — A reader settles into a rust-red chair beneath warm, checkered light, with an open book resting across her lap. Simplified shapes and gentle shadows keep the portrait-like scene calm, graphic, and easy to take in.
Hand-painted in oil with relaxed, broad marks, this intimate figurative work suits a reading room, bedroom, or welcoming sitting space.

Hand-Painted Quality & Process
Each work is painted by hand in oil on canvas. The artist builds color, brushwork, and surface texture by eye, so small variations are part of the handmade finish. Your finished painting may differ slightly from screen colors and product photography.

It's up now. The warm ochre background makes that corner feel more inviting.
That red chair caught my eye.
Still choosing a wall, but this reading scene already suits the corner with our books.
The reading scene is what drew me in, but I also really like the blocks of window light. The red chair gives it enough color to be noticeable from across the room. I don’t need every picture to be calm and beige. This feels warm and familiar. I’m keeping it near the books rather than treating it like a formal portrait.
We put it next to our reading chair, which felt like the obvious place.
For the book corner.
The seated posture feels relaxed. It is a nice scene to have near somewhere you actually unwind.
A portrait with a little story, rather than a face filling the whole canvas.
I like the simple open book detail; it gives the scene a familiar everyday feeling.
The open book is small, but it makes the scene feel familiar. The chair is still my favorite color in it.
